journaling: After our hike it was time for lunch so we headed back to TX 118 on the “improved “road and then East and South again until we arrived at the Chisos Basin Area. This area is a mountainous section in the center of the park. The park’s only hotel and restaurant are here along with a Visitors Center and a store. It is at 5500 feet elevation and is usually cooler than the surrounding desert even in the summer. The Chisos Mountains were formed by massive volcanic activity 32-38 million years ago. Their current shape was sculpted by the unrelenting erosion of water over millions of years. Casa Grande (Big House) Peak towers over the Basin area at 7,325 feet and is the remains of an ancient lava flow. We had brought our lunch (Sargentos Balanced snacks and turkey pastrami and Havarti roll-ups) and water and found a picnic table near the store where we could eat and rest. The flags were flying at half mast for the death of Barbara Bush.
