Heather Whitestone was the first woman with a hearing loss to win the coveted Miss America title. At that time, I was working with the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The CEO, Donna Dickman, managed to establish a personal relationship with Heather, who agreed to several appearances. AGBell's galas took place at the National Geographic Society and often had a NGS-theme of some sort. 1995 was about Australia.

The stars are a nod to Heather's platform - S.T.A.R.S. Green and gold are the national colors of Australia.
