Journaling - Post Chapel

These ruins are of the chapel which was chapel, library, schoolroom & Friday night ballroom. This building was the community center. It was also where court-martial proceedings took place.
Lt. Henry O. Flipper was the first black graduate of West Point in June 1877. He was assigned to Company A of the Tenth Calvary where he rendered excellent field services during the Victorio War. He then assumed the duties of Acting Commissary of Substance & Post Quartermaster at Fort Davis.

In 1881, his brilliant military career was cut short when he was accused of embezzling government funds and “conduct unbecoming an officer.” The controversial court-martial was held in the chapel and under prejudicial overtones; he was found guilty of improper conduct & dishonorably discharged.
Henry Flipper and his descendants sought to clear the military charges against him. In 1976, the Army Board of Correction reviewed the transcripts and changed his service records to show an Honorable Discharge date June 20, 1882
