Where to begin....I made this gift for my youngest brother who is 3 years older than me. He is finally retiring and I wanted to do something special for his retirement party. First, I asked my sis-in-law what his favorite colors are and what are his hobbies. Imagine my surprise when she said red, white and blue are his favorite colors! LOL. (I really didn't know how I would incorporate all three colors, but I did!) Hobbies are traveling, wine tasting and golfing. Well, I knew about the golfing but that was it. So, I came up with this idea of altering an unfinished box and filling it with fun stuff.

So first, I put all sorts of textures including some stenciling, drywall tape and diecuts that you will see in the following pictures. When that was completed I used Gesso over the entire box. When that was dry I painted it with Folk Art Metallic Blue Sapphire. When that was dry I took a round sponge dabber, tapped it in White Pearl DecoArt Metallic Acrylic Paint and dabbed over the raised edges. Then I covered it all with Tim Holtz Distress Crackle Paint in Clear Rock Candy.

On to embellishments...Lots of Tim Holtz and metal elements that I also dabbed with white pearl. The key was from a local Antique Mall that I've had for ages. The arrow from Hobby Lobby. The Tim Holtz tokens at the top are glued down to large canopy eyelets that I saved after the canopy was torn up in hard wind!. All the metal elements were glued down with TH Distress Collage Medium.

To incorporate red and white I diecut some scraps of paper and printed out the title, glued them all down with TH Distress Collage Medium in Matte finish. I then used it over the top of all three layers to seal it.
