I can't remember what I called them, but we had these all over where I lived as a child. Really annoying in the socks too! Poor pups!

While on vacation in Corning CA my little Havanese dog was loaded with these weed heads. We were at a place where all dogs had to be aired in a specific field away from any testing sites. This weed attached to the fur and then when you tried to pull it out the shaft breaks off and the arrow spear starts to travel and burrow. Took 40 min each day to comb these out. Nasty!!
