All my uncle's were in the Navy during that time. They joined just to serve and protect the U.S.A. patriotism was very important back then. Your page is a terrific tribute to your grandfather.

My dads father, Albert Lyman Brooks, entered the US Navy in early 1944. My dad said, as a father of a young child, he didnt have to enter the service but for whatever reason (Im thinking pay?) he did. I asked why the Navy and my dad thinks its because his father probably believed it was the safest of the various military arms. Unfortunately, he was wrong. By November, he was gone.
