I took the original card apart and trimmed away the mat that didn't really match the thread the way I thought it did when I chose it in the middle of the night. Also, the focal piece sat a bit crookedly on the card base.
This morning, I used Un-du to loosen one corner of the entire piece and then removed it from the card base. I trimmed back the original mat so it no longer showed. I cut a larger mat from white cardstock and colored around the edge with a Tombow Marker that matched the thread. I like it much better now. It's ready to give away.
