We had had warnings of coyote and lynx sightings in the wood about half a mile away for over a week. We had to be careful letting the dog out just in case. One afternoon in an effort to clear my head (and the snowdrift in front of the door), I heard this strange sound in the trees, and noticed a different bird. My phone didn't take a very good photo so borrowed one from the internet but I saw a Ruffed Grouse (these birds are normally very shy so I was pretty lucky to see one). They prefer the ground to trees but will hide in the snow covered branches.
