(The layout is actually straight! My picture-taking and cropping is wonky. I suppose I could say I did it on purpose since this is about things that lean)

Our canal boat captain was very entertaining and also full of cool bits of information. When asked why the houses all seem to lean, he explained (and I looked it up to verify) that the houses are built on wooden piles. Back in the day, there were not quality controls so the poles could have been made with inferior wood or not consistent in length or width. As a result, as water levels rise and fall (exposed wood shrink), the houses would sink as the sandy, swampy soil on which they were built shifted. Some of the older houses also lean forward! This was intentional when the houses were built: 1) products were hoisted up through the windows and by leaning forward, they wouldnt hit the building; 2) saved precious land space; and 3) kept the rain from flooding basements/lower levels.
