Journal: The California State Commissioners received an application, in the Spring of 1878, from the Rev. J.K. McLean and others, representing an association known as the Sunday School Union, for permission to erect in the Yosemite Valley a chapel. Their stated purpose was: "To erect an undenominational house of worship in the Yosemite Valley".They took their inspiration from two Old Testament scripture verses: Haggai 1:8 and Isaiah 2:2.
The application was granted, and the chapel was built the following year. The chapel was originally designed in a New England style In a one room building that was to seat 250 people.
The Yosemite Chapel, the oldest structure in Yosemite Valley, has been a place of worship, teaching, fellowship, and weddings for residents and visitors alike for over 140 years.
"Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD." Haggai 1:8
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it." Isaiah 2:2
