Mr. Levi is a man in our town who lives in a van. He doesn't work at a job but he walks around town doing odd jobs for money. My sister and I gave him a birthday party for his 61st birthday. He was sooo excited!! He showered and even washed his clothes at the local laundrymat. I was glad to have a "life lesson" for my kids. Many times I have explained to my kids that life is not all about their wants and desires. Helping others is a more rewarding feeling and much more satisfying! Throughout the year we take banana bread, fruit cups and other non refridgerated food items to Levi. We also collect our empty soda cans for him to recycle for $$. Mr. Levi is always very kind and very appreciative.

Helping Mr. Levi reminds me of one of my favorite songs from South Pacific titled You've Got To Be Carefully Taught.
The lyrics are: You've got to be taught to hate and fear. You've got to be taught from year to year. Its got to be drummed in your dear little ear. You've got to be carefully taught. You've got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are oddly made and people whose skin is a different shade - You've got to be carefully taught. You've got to be taught before its too late, before you are 6 or 7 or 8. To hate all the people your relatives hate You've got to be carefully taught! The song says it all. God did not put hate in us, it is a learned behavior that we are taught.

I love this song!!
