The Dunker Church has become one of the most noted landmarks of the Antietam Battlefield. It played a pivotal role during the course of the battle. One of the most famous photographs taken after the battle by Gardner shows Confederate dead in front of the battered and beaten Dunker Church that somehow withstood the fierce shelling of the battle. The Union troops used it as a guide during the battle, it was their goal to reach this tiny house of worship. Afterwards it was used as a medical station. It is amazing that it withstood the battle. The original church was destroyed in 1921 by a violent storm. It was rebuilt and restored by the battles 100th anniversary in 1962. It was built on the original foundation and with as much original material as possible.
