Last night I was having a dream about shopping/browsing in a local gift shop. It was a pretty benign, regular old dream. I was standing at a display looking at tart warmers and candles when the bell rings on the door. I glance over to see who is coming in and it's my grandfather with a big grin on his face. He is slim, handsome and impeccably dressed as he used to before the Alzheimer's and nursing home and says, "Hi Colleen" in his sing-songey, melodic voice. I am REALLY suprised and it all feels REALLY weird even in the dream because his walking in doesn't seem to fit into the dream at all...it's just random and weird. I smile and say, "Hi Grampy!" He then gives me a big hug and tells me that he was just stopping by to say hello and then says, "Well, I have to be going now." Then I woke up crying and laid there awhile before going back to sleep.
My grandfather has been in a nursing home for the past 4 years. The last few times we went to see him, he didn't know who any of us were. He has not been doing well this past month and just yesterday my Mom sent me and e-mail to let me know that he should pass away any day now.
Grampy started having frequent bouts of sleep apnea over the past couple days where he would stop breathing for a bit and then start again. They were getting longer and more frequent as of this morning, and this evening Mom called to let me know that Grampy had passed away peacefully.
