This tunnel is actually a bridge. In 1860 a railroad came to tiny Mendota to carry the furs to Chicago and east. The French trappers were appalled at this and way it was making Mendota too crowded, 20 families lived there now. So they left and headed North to Canada for more wilderness. the bridge was needed here as this was were people and horses and supplies were loaded to take to Fort Snelling located on the island across the river.
