The journey began on October 20, 2006. Katies water broke in the even. She was only 31 weeks pregnant. We rushed to the hospital with no idea what lay ahead. They kept Katie there for 3 weeks with her water broke before deciding it was safe to deliver Kaden. On the morning of November 9th the dr. induced labor. Katie tried all day but had to end up having a c-section at 10:30 that evening. Kaden was born perfect in all ways. He was breathing on his own, his color was great and he was a healthy 5 lbs. 7 ozs., especially for a 6 week premature baby. The Neonatoligist said they would have to keep Kaden about a week and make sure he was eating well and gaining wt. before he could go home. All was well... or so we thought.
When Kaden was 36 hours old he developed signs on an infection in his digestive system. The drs rans tests and determined he had NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis ) The next 12 hours were very scary, while other drs confired and took more tests to watch the path of the disease. Finally when Kaden was just 3 days old the pedatric surgeon said it was time to do exploratory surgery. He said that the walls of Kaden intestines were diseased and dying from the infection and that if his stomach wall was involved they wouldn't be able to save him.
An hour after the surgery started the dr. came out and told us the good news that Kaden's stomach was fine but that they would have to remove 80% of his small intestine. He also said that Kaden might have to have a intestinal transplant later and that the next 24 hours was crutial. After the surgery Kaden's blood pressure woundn't come up. They called a pediatric cardiologist to consult and it was determined that Kaden had a flap on the bottom of his heart that had reopened from the pressures from his first surgery. They had to take him in for heart surgery only 12 hours after the first surgery. He came thru that surgery well and began to grow storonger as the hours passed. In the next 2 months there were highs and lows as Kaden recovered and grew strong and we learned how to care for him. Katie spent every day at the hospital and I came every night after work and stayed in to the late night hours. At 11 weeks after the first surgeries, on January 18th, 2007, the drs determined it was time to resect Kaden's intestines and repair a blockage that had developed on the lower bowel. The surgery, although was only supposed to take 4 hours, took 7 1/2 hours but Kaden came thru like a champ. The drs had had to reconstruct part of his lower bowel and clean up alot of scar tissue in his abdomen. His appendix had to be removed also because it became inflamed from the damage of the large bowel perforating.
Again Kaden came thru like the trooper. He was able to return to eating in less than a week and went home from the hospital on February 13, 2007, 4 months after the journey began. He continues to thrive and exceed all the drs expectations. He truely is our Miracle Boy...
