This is the letter I wrote and read at my Mom's funeral.

Dear Mom,

Today’s the day that we say so long…not good-bye. I know your just waiting in heaven for us to join you one day. Knowing you, you’ll have a huge dinner with all the trimmings waiting on the table when we show up.

This last week was one of the saddest weeks of my life but one I will cherish forever. I’m so thankful that the lord gave me the opportunity to be there and not only help take care of you, but share with you my heart and love.

I’m grateful that after Danny came along you and dad decided to adopt a little girl. Little did you know I was waiting in a foster home for a mommy and daddy to love me. It all changed that day in Happy Hallow park when a chubby little girl walked up and said “Hi Dare”. That’s when you knew I was just the one you wanted to be your daughter.

Over the years when people learn that I’m adopted they ask “don’t you ever want to find out who your REAL mother is? I just smile and say no, I already know who my REAL mom is…
A real mom is someone who takes their daughter to sign up for brownies, and sees no one respond when the scout leader asks for a volunteer to be a leader. Then you felt your hand being raised by me. You didn’t get mad you just smiled and agreed. I might add, you were the BEST brownie leader ever!

I remember when I was in second grade and just had to be a butterfly for the school Halloween parade. You made the cutes costume with big pink wings. Once the parade was over I decided what I REALLY wanted to be when I went trick or treating was a black cat. Without any complaint you got out your sewing machine and made me a black cat costume complete with a wire tail and a big red bow on the end.

When I was in seventh grade I’ll never forget the time we were eating lunch at Happy Steak and I was smarting off about something, which was sooo unusual for me. You had a spoonful of potato salad and pointed it right at your target…Me. I smiled and said you wouldn’t dare. Well, you made a believer out of me as I was wiping potato salad off my face. We laughed all the way home about our one-sided food fight.

Mom, you always made sure that Danny and I were able to do whatever we wanted. Like the time I had just joined the youth choir at Calvary Temple and came home and told you and dad that they were going to Canada on a Choir trip and I wanted to go. You hurried around and got the material to make my dress and made sure all was taken care of so I wouldn’t miss out on this trip. It was on that trip where I made the decision to stop playing church and live for the Lord.

You and dad were the ones who cared for me when I was sick even after I was married and Scott was at work you and dad drove clear across town to bring me seven-up when I had the flu.

So, like I said before I know who my REAL mom is, it’s you! I may not have come from your body but I know I came from your heart.
