Beautiful journaling. My oldest son also have autism. I made a search in the gallery and came accross your layout. You say exactly what I want to say to my son. Thank you.
Ok....thanks a lot! I am crying my eyes out!! My little boy also has autism! This is just touching! I may have to MEMORIZE your journaling! Thank you so much for sharing this!!
As an autistic child, Troy will spend his entire life facing challenges we can only imagine. We will never know exactly how he feels or what he thinks. Even though I am a strong advocate for increasing autism awareness and believe in helping others learn more, I don't want Troy to get caught up in the idea that there is something wrong with him. So I created this page so that, in the future, he understands what we understand - that he is an amazing child with unlimited abilities that many just don't recognize.
" 'Troy may have Autism!' You were three years old the first time your doctor mentioned the 'A' word. She began asking Nanny probing questions during a routine visit. How often do you speak? How many words do you know? How often do you flap your arms? Nanny called me at work in tears to tell me. My heart stopped. I thought of Rain Man and Mercury Rising and of the challenges those characters faced. What do we do now? Is there a cure? What will you have to face in the future? My mind was spinning.
"Looking back, that seems so very long ago. We know so much more now. We've spent countless hours researching and learning everything we can about treatments and options, pushing to make sure you get the best education possible. We've learned that autism is just a label, a way for doctors and educators to try and define a huge spectrum of characteristics of which a few just happen to apply to you. It is not who you are.
"You are simply extraordinary. You see the world differently than we do and you face challenges in a unique way. You are an amazing child - bright, beautiful, fun, and loving. You continue to inspire everyone you meet.
"We don't believe your autism is a disability. You are not the face of autism. You are simply Troy.
"Autism is just another word."
