The Flight
We took a car service to the airport…uneventful ride. We checked in, only to find out that our luggage was over-weight (both pieces). She said to us that she’d have to charge us $50 for the piece that was overweight.. Joe said, “Well, actually both pieces are overweight.”. Because we were so honest, she only charged for the one piece. We got the wheel chair service we’d requested and I grabbed us a couple of breakfast sandwiches.
After boarding, we taxi’d for awhile, and then stopped suddenly. We had a light that was malfunctioning. Maintenance dialed in and after about 30 minutes, we took off. We were on our way to Washington Dulles…scheduled to arrive a little after 5PM.
About 4:30, we hear an announcement: “You may have noticed a little while ago that we made a wide circle. The mechanical issue we had in Denver is preventing us from landing in any weather that isn’t clear. So we had to divert to Chicago. We’ll give you more information as soon as we can.” Long story short, we weren’t allowed to change our flights in Chicago because while there was another plane, the flight crew had to get to the new plane quickly and take off quickly or they would run the risk of being over their flight time. So, we hurried to the new plane, took off, and landed in Dulles around 7:30. Our light to Rome had taken off around 6:30. Fortunately, United got us on a flight to Frankfort, Germany. We had a long layover in Frankfort, but were able to catch a flight to Rome which arrived around 5:30 PM Sunday instead of 8:30 AM. So finally, we’re in Rome. After looking for our Globus representative for nearly two hours, she showed up and we got to our hotel after 7:00, missing our welcome dinner. But, we were ready to begin our tour!
The Luggage
A couple of months before we left, we bought some fabulous, and light weight, Briggs and Riley luggage at Colorado Baggage, a nice wheeled carry on and a great tote. When we got the materials from Globus Vacations, we found we were limited to only one piece of luggage per person, plus a small tote that would fit under the bus seat. So…the day before we were to leave, I went back to Colorado Baggage and bought two large suitcases to match the tote so we could fit more into the luggage. Problem Solved…until we checked in.
The Cell Phone
We had an interesting start to our 1st European vacation. About two weeks before we left, we ordered an international cell phone. It was one of those phones where you simply buy minutes on a SIMS card, and then use the time up…after the minutes are used, the card is replaced from your credit or debit card. Ed, Joe’s brother, tried the phone on Friday and night and it didn’g work. When we called the provider, they said it woulnd work until probably mid-week. Oh well, people didn’t have cell phones 20 years ago. No big deal.
