I have told the story of Joe and Georgia before when I scrapped their wedding photos and for those who remember I apologize for repeating but when I found this haunting photo of them I had to tell it again....
When I was a child I used to stand and stare at
the potrait of a lady in a Wedding Dress in my grandmothers living room. One day she came in
and asked me if I wanted to know the story of her and I said yes. Grandmother said this was her sister her only sibling and she said that Georgia was the
beautiful one but after seeing pictures of a young
Nettie(MY grandmother) I don't know about that.
Anyway Granny said that Georgia was born in 1889 and that she loved children and wanted very much to be a school teacher. By the time that Georgia was 15 she had taken all the required coarses that were required in those days to teach in a 1 room school. Georgia taught for several yrs and in 1915 she met a dashing young man named Joe, who swept her off her feet. The fell deeply in love. On June 17 1915
they wed. They were extremely happy. Georgia who always loved children so much became pregnant. Granny said they spent many hours crocheting and sewing a beautiful layette. On June 27 1917 Georgia went into labor. It was a very difficult birth and Georgia and the baby both died. My husbands step mother who was a child at the time said that she remembed that Georgia was the first person that she ever saw dead. She said that she never forgot the beautiful young woman with the baby in her arms. Young Joe was heartbroken. He soon was sent overseas to fight in WWI. Joe was killed 6 weeks after Georgia and the baby died, making the whole family gone almost before it began. Some say that Joe died of a broken heart. I remember so well seeing my Grandmother who really was a very hard woman with tears in her eyes as she told me this story, that I never forgot. As I said I have told this story before when I scrapped their Wedding photos but when I found this photo I just had to retell it again. Sorry for the repitition.
