Journaling:
About three or four months ago, our neighbor Deborah saw a man drive by our street and throw a chicken out of his car. The chicken began to hang out at Deborah’s house by their doorway. It would stare at them through their front room window. She has to young children and was a bit worried bout the chicken because it seemed a little aggressive. She thought maybe it had been a fighting cock. She had called animal control a number of times. They came out but never caught the chicken

Time went on and the chicken began to expand her territory. Soon she was roaming about a two block radius. We are right next to the forest preserves but the chicken never seemed to wonder toward it. The chicken actually did quit well for herself. We were surprised that she wasn’t caught by a fox or coyote.

Then in April they caught one and sited another cougar not far from our neighborhood. We were a bit concerned the chicken would be cougar bait.

It was actually pretty amusing living in the City of Chicago and looking out your front window to see a chicken run across your front lawn.

She sort of started becoming the neighborhood pet. The kids were always following her around. She would let you get real close to her.

I would be standing outside talking to a neighbor and suddenly say, oh look their goes the chicken!” I can tell you one thing that chicken always put a smile my face.

On April 18, 2008, our neighbor Ronda saw the chicken on her front lawn. The chicken then crossed the street to the Illings house. Rhonda called Denise to jokingly say, “Your chicken is home.” The chicken had begun to take up residence in her yard. Denise said, “You know we should probably call animal control. The chicken is leaving droppings all over the place. The kids keep following it around it’s probably not a good idea for it to be roaming our block.” She called animal control. It was a beautiful day so a lot of the neighbors were outside. When animal control arrived the neighbors were attempting to help catch the chicken. I have to say it was very entertaining. Finally they caught her. The man from animal control said they were going to take her to a farm. I hope that’s true.

The kids were all upset when they came home from school to find out the chicken was gone. Later Rhonda and Denise felt guilty. I think everyone actually misses the chicken. I know I do. I mean she did always make me laugh, and I like laughing.
