We as Americans owe so much to those brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Civil War, without it we wouldn't be the nation we are today. I wanted to honor all of those from my state of Michigan who bravely fought to preserve the Union and free the slaves.

The photos and enlistment photos are from the Michigan Historical Society.

Journaling Says
During the course of the Civil War, more than 90,000 Michiganders served in the Union army, including African-Americans, Native Americans, and even a few women. Michigan units participated in some of the war’s key battles like Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. An estimated 14,753 Michigan soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Their sacrifice helped to preserve the Union and to free the slaves. All those who served deserve our thanks. They helped to make it a land forever free.
