This layout has been on my mind for a while - since the devastation of Katrina and since I received the most recent issue of National Geographic, which focuses on Africa and the continent's struggles with poverty and AIDS.
Journaling reads: It is easy to forget, in this land of plenty, how truly blessed we are. Aden, I hope you realize (even in your preschool “me me me” phase) that you are a very lucky boy. You were born healthy and strong and smart, you have two parents who love you VERY much and make it a priority to spend lots of time with you, we never have to worry about basic necessities like food and shelter, and you certainly have an abundance of extras - a room full of toys, friends galore, special treats and trips, and a beautiful baby sister on the way. I think about children in other countries, and even here in the United States, born into poverty or famine or disease, and I can’t help but wonder why we have so much while others have so little. We don’t live under constant threat of war. We have clean water to drink, reliable food sources, and education is available to everyone. Remember to be grateful for all that you have. I know that I am.
