Today’s adventure took us to Mountain Loop Hwy. The trail starts right off the road just about 9 miles past Verlot Ranger Station. The trailhead is visibly marked and there is a pull out for about 2 cars plowed by the side of the road.
I snowshoed Marten Creek few years ago in deep powder with snow bound trees everywhere around and it was like strolling through a magical winter wonderland. The trail does not have any real views but when conditions are right it makes for an amazing winter adventure. Today’s conditions were different. We still had great time and enjoyed our outing but personally I think it’s better to head up there after fresh snow is reported for the area.
The trail did not give us any time to warm up. It started uphill on hard packed snow. We took our snowshoes in case we encounter deeper powder higher but to our surprise after we ascended our initial about 200 feet the snow completely disappeared and we were hiking on dirt for next 800 vertical feet before we saw few snow patches re-appearing. Soon afterwards we reached the snow level and walked on the semi slippery pack for the rest of our trip. Snowshoes were not needed but Yak Tracks were pretty helpful.
