Oh my gosh!!! A Singer Featherweight!!! I have one myself and it is in its original carrying case!! It was given to me a good 35 years ago by my husband's elderly cousin!! I started sewing at about the age of 12, when my mom and grandma showed me how (grandma on her treddle Singer!, and I took Home Ec in high school and learned more there. I loved to sew for years but kind of gave it up (for the most part) after my boys were born. Our house is really tiny and it was a big hassle setting it up on my kitchen table and taking it down every day. I sewed for people when I was in high school to earn money to get my own clothes or buy material to make my own. Mom had it rough. My biggest sewing accomplishments were a western suit for a step-uncle, my wedding gown and veil, western shirts and jeans for my husband and myself, cords for my husband, a fleece lined denim jacket, a 3-piece skirt, jacket and blouse as well as other outfits for my boss's mother, amongst other things! I'm impressed with your costume making. I need to dig out that Featherweight and use it in my scrapbooking, since it is lightweight! Love your layout, by the way!!!
You really got the perfect papers and embellishments for this layout! My mom used to have an old Singer that had a trundle. While I never got the sewing bug, I loved picking fabric and patterns. I spent many hours watching her trundle on that sewing machine.
Congrats on adding this to your collection. I have a 1906 Singer treadle that I learned to sew on. I didn't have an electric until after I was married. Still love that old treadle. It has a beautiful stitch. Love the vintage look of this lovely layout. Your zipper flowers are the perfect embellishment.
Wow! As a former seamstress and fashion design student myself, I know what a great find that was! And now you have 2? Lucky girl!! Love how you scrapped this, especially the background work! Thanks for playing in the June Mixed Media Challenge!
My aunt used to teach sewing classes at the Singer store in El Paso, Texas. She did not have any girls, so she took me and some of my cousins to the store and we all learned how to sew. I am the only one that really liked it. I don't sew much these days, but the good thing is my granddaughter is learning. She wanted me to teach her. You did a great job scraping this. Love the buttons and ribbons.
I'm not a seamstress, but my mother was an incredible one, so I know how much love and work go into sewing as a craft. How wonderful that you have a piece (or two) of sewing history! I absolutely love the zipper flowers, especially the larger one. Did you make them? I'm really inspired by them.
This was made for a few challenges. National _ Day. In honor of June 13th- National Sewing Machine Day! Mixed Media, Pick-a-technique. Journaling: I fell in love with sewing when I was 6 years old. From then on, it became my passion. I took every type of sewing classes, even Tailoring in High School. I got a degree in Fashion design. Taught sewing classes at The Fabric Gallery. Then, seamstress at The Theatre Company sewing costumes. Through it all… I fell in love with sewing machines. My first machine was a 1974 Elna Super. Which I still LOVE and use today, as my go to machine. But, I never owned a Singer Featherweight. The little black one… Until one Saturday in July, 2013. I drove Stephen to work and saw a Estate Sale Sign. My car went there on it’s own… Then I saw it, she was gorgeous!!! It looked like the owner had received it as a wedding present in 1951, maybe used it a few times. I felt that $350 was not a bad price for the shape she was in, so I bought it! So, now I had one!!! Not a month later, a co-worker said that a little old lady in their church quilting club was selling her’s. Same year but, not in as good of shape…. I said I would not pay more than $250. So, I now have TWO!!
