What a beautiful vintage piece. Did you check the back for info? Larkin was a popular company that produced oak pieces long ago. You can clean it up with Murphy's oil soap. I am glad you are leaving it untouched because paint would actually ruin the detail. Maybe an antique doily or runner would look nice then put vintage pictures of relatives on top in pretty frames.
I would refinish it using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - no need to prep. Use her dark wax on the detail areas to highlight / distress. Or leave it as is... it is beautiful Lucky you!!
I would leave it too... but I'm a fan of wood toned objects anyway. But also, until you know more of the history of it, altering it could affect any value it might have... especially if it is the original finish. It is very pretty and good for you!
wow - what a great find! I would leave it as is - it is so beautiful, and you can see the lovely detail. Rare to find that in today's pieces. It's nice to have at least one "wood-tone" piece in a room full of white/shabby chic items. Hope you find out more about its history!
My DH bought this for me from craigslist today :) I will use it to store bolts of ribbon, paper ect. I wish I knew more about it. If anyone knows anything I would love some info. The seller said that all the hardware is original and it even has the original key and all the locks work. It's SO much prettier than the old black cd cabinet that I was using before. I am tempted to refinish it but I don't know what to do yet. I would love suggestions. At first I thought a white shabby style finish would be pretty but now I am not sure. I was planning on doing that to my scrap table and chairs and recovering the chairs.
