I wanted to make my small room into a personal space, as well....mostly of nostalgia and heirlooms...and pictures, of course. I was running out of wall space so I decided 4ft shelving would be a great idea. Menards was my friend! The blue cabinet is an old grubby one found at an antique store (i am into that kind of stuff) but instead of using it as decor in the house, I use it for storing paint, stencils, transfer tape, etc. It's perfect. Above it, is the far left side of my shelf unit. I was a huge Annie fanatic when I was 10 (in 1982) so you can see the rag dolls. The Annie music box was my best friend's from high school...I always remember her having it and a few weeks back, she gave it to me:) The bears are from the Olympics in 1980....it was the mascot bear. The one on the left was the one my original bear. My uncle gave it to me and I became so attached to it...I was 8. It's worn, has holes in it, it's matted....but I won't part with it. Next to it is a bear in its original/new condition I found in an antique store. :)
