Here is another example of using self designed paper in a 12 x 12 layout. The paper that I designed on this one is the stripes. The "circles" background paper is not one I designed. However, I didn't have enough of it for what I wanted to do here so I scanned it in, distressed it in Adobe, and printed on 8 1/2 x 11 photo paper. See page 2 for how this coordinates.
