This is my LO for the "Butterfly Whispers" Swirlydoos Round Robin Challenge.

The challenge was to scrap something you've never scrapped before. Well, I can honestly say that I've NEVER scrapped bugs before.

When I was in 7th grade, I created a science fair project on the life cycle of the cicada. I spent the entire summer hunting these insects in various stages of their development - from the moment they emerged out of the ground to the final seconds before they took flight. I learned how to identify males and females, and how the males make the characteristic buzzing sounds by inflating little membranes under the drum plates on their tummies.

But the most fascinating lesson I think was about their wings. I learned that these bugs emerge from their shells with their wings folded up and wet. They have to pump blood (I assume) through the wing veins to fill them so that they can eventually take flight. During this time, the insect is perfectly still, because if anything happens during that time between filling and flying, the wings can be permanently damaged. If that happens, the insect is doomed - it will never fly, it will never reproduce, it will be at the mercy of the birds who are looking for an easy meal.

I learned that nature is full of miracles. I learned how to be patient and wait for them.

My project won a blue ribbon, which qualified me for the regional science fair. Ever since that time, these bugs have a particular affection for me. I photographed this one last summer, and I kind of hoped that I'd find a way to scrapbook the picture someday. Guess it's someday.

All the papers (Prima Flights of Fancy)are from the Butterfly Whispers Swirlydoo kit. The bottom paper is American Crafts Smoke Cardstock covered with home made shimmer mist made from Pumice Stone Distress Reinker.

The big grey flowers are made from a satin ribbon that I had in my stash, using a Swirlydoos tutorial. The rest of the flowers are glue ups. The big pink ones are silk ones that I bought at dollar general, took apart, inked with Tattered Rose Distress Ink, and then glued up. The small pink ones are Bazzills, inked again with Tattered Rose Distress Ink.

The butterfly is Prima - from my Swirlydoos kit. The crystals came from the kit - they're really beautiful, but I have no idea where Krissy found them!

The stitch work was done using a Bazzills In-Stich'z template. The chipboard letters are Thickers - Rockabye, inked with Tattered Rose. The little pearls are Basic Gray. And the silver buttons are from my stash.
