Mom cant remember who the baby is - we know he or she is not her son or me because the photo was taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s. But its someone in the family on my moms side!

I was happy I got to meet Cousin Miyoko when we lived in Japan during the 1980s! She was a bit of tragic soul - she married a burakumin - part of the outcaste community in Japan (very similar to the outcastes of India). She couldnt have children so she and her husband adopted a boy; I believe her husband died early. To earn a living, she worked on one of the US military bases and learned some English. Sadly, by the time I got to meet her, she was a very heavy drinker (though a happy one) but it also took a toll on her son, who had to take care of her, and - at the time - not much older than me (I was about 15). Eventually, he left and a little while later she passed away alone. Were not quite sure what became of him.

I can still remember all of us sitting around her table, eating and having a fun time speaking in Jinglish (Japanese-English).
