Journaling reads:
9/11/05: In April, we bought Lillian a new bike for her birthday. She had outgrown her old one, and though the
bike we found came with trainging wheels, we decided it was high time she learned how to ride without them.
But it was quite the trip getting Lillian to ride without training wheels. First, there was the question of finding time
to take her somewhere to teach her; we had no good place at our house. I took her and the other kids to a local
park several times and tried to teach her there while the other kids played nearby. While I worked with Lillian
to ride her bike without training wheels. It was thrilling to see her do it a few times, and fun to hear her say,
“Don’t let go! Don’t let go!” over and over again. Joey watched, and took the pictures for us. But after a couple
of sessions, a few days apart, we simply didn’t get around to doing it again. We started swimming lessons and
with our other summer routines, we just didn’t make time to do it. The kids didn’t ride their bikes much this
summer, except on the deck. Now here it is September, Lillian has started first grade, and she still hasn’t learned
how to ride without the training wheels. But I suppose it will come in time, when it’s important enough to her.
For now, she simply doesn’t care to learn -- I’ve offered a few times to take her out and teach her, but she’d rather
leave those training wheels in place for a little bit longer.
