Absolutely gorgeous layout. The photo of your grandmother is gorgeous. I am so sorry that she was not happy here and my heart goes out to her and you and your family. I love the amazing feeling you achieved here and the beautiful bitter sweet memory of her.
How sad for her, that life in America did not come with the sense of new beginnings and happiness. Your artwork is indeed brooding and moody - it is amazing as always and well suited for her image. May Grandma rest in peace.
Thank you for sharing the story. So sad. Almost wish one could of been there to help her through things. Wonderful page to fit the story. Love the layers and design.
Beautiful LO Natalie! Your symbolism is perfect for the photo and your grandmother's life situation. The techniques have added so much to this piece, with the paint running down the page and the directionality of some of the paper pieces, as well as the paper curls (great texture). What an interesting and lovely work of art! Fave, as always!
what a MASTERPIECE Natalie. You have definitely created a deep sadness here. To capture such emotion on paper with bits of pp, molding paste and embellies is AMAZING. You are quite the artist Natalie. Although it saddens me also to think that your Grandmother did not find some happiness and joy in her life.
Oh you captured that deep, soul sadness so amazingly! The moodiness with the colors and drips is phenomenal, but then again your work is always spectacular :) Incredible capture of your Grandmother's Melancholy~although I hate that she spent a lifetime living with such sadness~
So sad that she never really found her place here...your layout conveys the mood beautifully with the colours, tearing and details....beautiful and touching.
How sad that this beautiful lady never found inner peace in her self or her surroundings. You have captured her demeanor perfectly and admire how you created such a wonderful creation.
The emotions exude from this lo! How hard it must have been to create....however, you did it with such finesse!!! Your tribute to her is truly a stunning work of art!
OH MY...you have perfectly captured the mood you were intending it to be!! An absolute masterpiece of which you have put your heart and soul into!! Love all the personal touches and beautiful embellies, techniques and textures!! Such a sad story, I felt the need to wipe a tear myself as I was reading your description!! Love this!!
Positively exquisite page; love the colour palette that seems as sad as your grandmother!! The layering is fabulous, superb masking and how wonderful to have the rosary beads! I really admire the beautiful metal embellies, they add greatly to your fabulous masterpiece!!
WOW, you've really managed to replicate your grandmother's sadness here with the moody colors, the dripping paint that looks like tears, the torn, distressed bits of paper and molding paste - a beautiful work of art - another FAVE for me. I love that you used the discs from the Polish rosary beads. How very sad that your grandmother was never able to transition to her life in the new world.
An amazing layout. So much detail and the love that went into it is so evident. Thank you for sharing the story behind it. Love the metal elements, layering, distressing, masking and flowers. So many things to look at. Lovely.
The photo is of my Grandmother, and it shows her usually sad face. She seldom smiled, and always had a handkerchief in her hand to wipe away the tears that seemed to fall constantly. She exuded a certain melancholy- "tesknota" - a specific kind of Polish melancholy which for an outsider is hard to understand. It roughly translates as a nostalgic yearning or longing with tonalities of sadness, precipitated by a "forever parting", in which life figures as a river of pain and suffering.
My Grandmother was an immigrant from Poland, and she was never really "happy" here in America. Her life was difficult, and she never overcame the social, cultural and language barriers.
I hoped to create a layout which presented this particular feeling of sadness. I wanted the page to be "moody" in feeling with a monochromatic palette of "sad" purple/blue colors. I added some personal objects in the form of 2 discs from old Polish rosary beads. One is of "Our Lady of Cestochowa", a special image beloved by Poles. A picture of the Lady hung in my Grandmother's bedroom. I also used 2 vintage keys, and 2 vintage jet buttons. Torn bits of paper placed in a downward pattern (signifying sadness), mists, inks, and molding paste were also used on this page.
Thank you to all who look at this page, I surely do appreciate it.
