Today I love Java in the misty morning, waiting patiently while I fix her breakfast. She knows the chickens get fed first around here because they actually WORK for a living instead of just hanging out being pasture ornaments. She's so good natured, and while it's a little sad to see her in the pasture by herself, she seems to be adjusting to a solitary lifestyle with good grace.

It's also been good for her training. Now that Dolce has gone to God, Java is the horse getting all the attention. There's never a question about which horse to ride, because at the moment, I have only one, so that's a non-starter. She's always been a great trail horse, but now I'm having the time and focus to refine her ability under saddle and she and I have made some incredible strides in that department just in the past two weeks. She's learning a lot about collecting, and getting on the bit, and paying attention to me rather than whatever else is going on around her. I'm finding her quite a pleasant individual.

She's a lot less sensitive than Dolce, so I don't have to worry about her getting her feelings hurt or overthinking things or getting anxious about what I'm getting ready to ask her to do. And she's a LOT smarter - which is sometimes not a great thing. She always has an alternate suggestion for anything I ask her to do, and sometimes her suggestion is better than mine. Which is a little scary when you think about it. I mean, my horse being smarter than me? I don't know about that idea. So it's a good thing she's so agreeable and good natured.
