I got the idea for this layout from an e-mail that my cousin sent me. I re-worded it a little bit and used it here for my journaling. Then, Sarah and I had a photo shoot with some of our aprons. The embroidered (with the dogs) and the lavender print apron were given to me by my mother. I know the lavender one belonged to my grandmother - and I think my mother made the embroidered one. The green apron with the huge pockets is one that I made. The other three are some that Sarah got at an antique sale.

The journaling reads:

Today people don’t really know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few. Aprons used less material, so it was easier to wash aprons than dresses.

But, along with that, aprons served as potholders for removing hot pans from the oven. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds and it also made an ideal hiding place for shy kids. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace the 'old-time apron’. It served so many purposes. Today people would go crazy just trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.


The pps and embellies are all Cosmo Cricket except for the background cs and the three vintage buttons. Lettering, flowers, frame and embellies are hand cut. Added some doodling and inking to everything. TFL!
