Hidden Journaling:
Andrea was digging thru our boxes of pictures recently when she came across this particular photo. She rushed downstairs just beaming with happiness on finding it again. This is a photo from November 22nd, 1974, featuring the 2 year old version of me, David Lamp. My mother had mailed this and several other pictures of me as a kid to Andrea while we still lived in Missouri, to show Andrea how “adorable” her little boy had been. Mom's forget that their sons can still be embarrassed even as adults. Andrea commented on how my smile and my eyes were still the same even today, then she wondered….what else about me was still the same? So we began comparing David the boy to David the man. To her surprise it seems that besides my height being different (taller, thank you very much) and my hair color (it changed to brown when I was about 6) I'm still very much the same person. I've always been a lover of reading. I was reading at a 4th grade level while in 1st grade, did book reports just so I could read books, and spent 3-4 hours getting lost in Waldens bookstore at the mall. I basically was raised on reading since my parents knew it would expand both my knowledge and imagination. Today, I still read every single day, I make books the main items on my gift wish list, and the 3-4 hours of getting lost in a bookstore is now at Borders with a Chai Latte. Another then and now transitional piece of me is sports. I grew up playing them all; football, baseball, basketball, soccer. I even had soccer as part of my high school and collegiate life. The thrill of competition, the pride in achieving victories both personally and as a team, the work ethic and discipline required to succeed. Sports instilled all this and more in me. Though age and knee surgery has reduced my individual athletic contribution to spectator, the team mentality and drive to win is what keeps me focused on managing my workplace everyday towards success. Plus I still get geared up and loud for every Steelers game. Being a fan is almost participating in the sport itself, right? I used to dream about being a pilot; now I still love to fly, even if it's in coach. I'd sneak out of bed to watch those sci-fi/scary movies showing on late night TV; now my DVD collection is basically “The Best of Vampires, Zombies, Monsters and Aliens” with a hard to find comedy or chick flick scattered around. It's funny but true; the personality building blocks I laid for myself with my interests and activities are still the foundation of what I have become as an adult. Sure, I may sound like a dreamer, even slightly on the nerdy side, but I'm glad the child in me is still riding his bike and playing with Transformers. Because once upon a time a 2-year old dreamed of growing up into a smart, successful man and 36 years later I think God and the little boy on the inside made all those dreams come true.
