While Bill and I were in the pool one day we decided it would be great if Joe lived on the property with us but we wanted him to have his own space and we wanted our own space and our own privacy. From the pool we talked about the possibility of building it between our house and the right side fence. That would leave about 16' for a walkway between Joe's house and the guest house.

David King & Associates, a local architect drew up plans and we hired John Morton, owner of JC Morton Company build Joe's house. Once plans were completed and submitted to the county a meeting was called which included John Morton, David King and several people from planning and zoning. Joe and I both attended the meeting where we were informed we could not have two residences on our property.

Finally they bent a little when they met Joe and understood that he was a seizure patient and needed to be on our property. If we would make changes in the plans they would approve it. We had to agree to move Joe's house to the left so it joined the end of the guest house, (already attached to our house) and the walkway had to be between Joe's house and the fence. That would put everything under one roofline and satisfy their one house per property rule. Once we made those changes, plans were approved almost as soon as they were submitted.

The problem was that Bill had booked a 30 day South Pacific cruise for us that left San Francisco on September 22nd. We had to leave Ocala on September 21st to be at the dock to get on the ship and building on Joe's house was scheduled to start on September 23rd. What timing!

Before the cruise Bill and Joe removed small trees and shrubs and moved big rocks and other obstacles from the place the house was to be built. Jim Poston agreed to be the go-between with the builder in our absence in case any decisions had to be made and we couldn't be reached. When we got home on November 18th, we drove in the driveway to see Joe's house nearly finished!
