These are photos of my maternal grandmother and grandfather circa 1914 and the Yorkville social club, which was instrumental in their meeting. My grandmother and grandfather were born in the U.S., but were both children of Germans who immigrated to the U.S. in their early twenties. Don't you just love those bathing suits?

The journaling reads: "My grandfather, Ted Lay, met my grandmother, May Meyer, through the Yorkville social club. The club was comprised of German immigrants who settled in Yorkville, NY. These photos were taken circa 1914 at a club outing at North Beach, which is now part of Laguardia Airport. My grandfather was attracted to my grandmother because of her lively personality. She liked him because he was very handsome, but when she found out she was almost 4 years older than him, she declined his advances. He continued to pursue her and eventually his persistence paid off."
