NC Zoo - Asheboro, NC, July 2005
***
It's easy to see whose the boss.
We watched this lion for a long time, hoping he would go inside the enclosure so that the lioness Would come outdoors with her 2 young cubs. But he did not go in and we did not see the lioness or the cubs. The king of the jungle can lay anywhere he wants for as long as he wants, and nobody, I mean nobody, tells him when he has to get up and go inside.

It's not bad being king of the apes either.

It was a beautiful day for a visit to the zoo. The temp was in the nineties, but the humidity was not too high so we were all comfortable. It was also a good day for the animals. They seemed quite happy to be outdoors.

Great care is invested in the design and maintenance of the landscape. Poncirus trifoliata, known as "The flying dragon" because of its vicious thorns, draped gracefully over some walkways. The photo above is the monkeys' play area.
