We have a new family addition in the form of a tiny yellow budgie. As most of you know I took in a injured crow last August or thereabouts. The bird rehab place would not take him but did look him over and declared his wing just sprained. They told me to feed him cat/dog food until he was healed in a week or two. Yeah, right! That wing never healed correctly, he always holds it at an wrong angle so I think it was broken and healed wrong. So I hope to build him a outdoor aviary out of pallets and wire. Just something he can use to learn how to fly again. I am optimistic that he can relearn although he`ll never be as fast and agile as he once was.
However, as he is a young bird, maybe just now reaching his first birthday, he doesn`t seem to know much about being a bird. So I thought perhaps if I could borrow a pet bird for a couple weeks to see how he reacts and if learns anything from watching it. That is when I found this little budgie with a sad story....he was taken to a pawn shop! Totally illegal but apparently this place does it fairly often, they just sell the animals as their own pets, not listed as pawned items which they actually are. Anyway a young woman bought him a couple months back but now admits the novelty has worn off and she doesn`t want him. I figured if he was a bad fit for our family at least I would take the time to ensure he gets to a great forever home.
When I picked him up though and placed him, cage and all, on my daughters knee, he did something so odd that I just knew he belonged in our family. He picked up a seed and using his tongue he flicked it at Finnegan and hit him in the face LOL. I was worried that he would be stressed going to a new place, especially one with pets but apparently he knows how to take care of himself!
As for Lucky (the crow) he had a different reaction when I put the budgie, which we named Tweetheart, next to his cage. He opened his beak wide and just stared. From a human perspective it looked like total disabelief but from his bird perscpective I think it was more like, "If I could reach that yellow morsel I bet I could fit it in my beak and devour it with one swallow." Crows do eat small rodents and birds but not in my house! lol He is definitely fascinated with him.
As for Tweetheart he could care less about all the attention. I filled his cage with new perches, toys, mirrors, a bird bath and even a swing and he has been been happily exploring his new stuff. He loves to preen his feathers. The only thing that got his attention was the vaccuum which he insisted on trying to sing louder than.
