I'm not a fan of seafood, so I probably wouldn't go there if I'm ever in Charleston so it's cool to get to see it on your pages. Love the shots of the celebrity plaques :)
I would love to go to Charleston - always had that Southern Romance thing going for it. I love my seafood but I am picky but I might even try this place out if I ever get there.
John and Danielle rave about Hyman's Seafood Restaurant so we couldn't leave Charleston with stopping there. It was only a short walk from the Market and the line outside was only about 15 minutes long so we decided to eat there. (John and Danielle said it is not uncommon to wait over an hour in line because they don't take reservations.) Now we understand why Southern Living Magazine polls indicate that out of 18 states from Delaware to Florida to Texas, Hyman's rated #1 in the Southeast for 9 years running. The Food Channel Network listed in the Top 5 in “The Best in Seafood” category. The list of ratings and awards would take an entire page to type out!
We split a $15.95 combo meal with fried clams, shrimp and calamari and it was more than we could eat. We had a coupon for a free cup of potato soup and before we ordered they brought us a complimentary order of cheese grits with 2 fried green tomatoes on top and a plate of hushpuppies. In addition we also had fried potatoes which were out-of-this-world good and Bill had coleslaw while I had an individual sweet potato casserole. One meal was more than enough for both of us; we couldn't finish the fried potatoes, hush puppies or the sweet potato casserole. The calamari was the best I've ever eaten – so tender! The shrimp was excellent. The fried clams were good, but not as special as the calamari and shrimp.
The walls are covered with the photos of celebrities who have eaten at Hyman's and there are multiple plaques mounted on each of the tables telling which famous people have eaten at that table. We were eating on the table previously occupied by Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey and Col. Oliver North. (Not at the same time, of course.)
In the back is a door where visiting celebrities can be ushered in without being seen going in the front doors – many of the bands and entertainers and well as political people and sports figures regularly eat at Hyman's when they are in Charleston. Hymans is a real hot spot for visiting entertainers!
We couldn't believe our total bill was only 15.95 plus tax and tip and we had more food than we could possibly eat, even with splitting the meal. Next time I want to try the fried lobster which means the tab will definitely be more that $15.95!
After leaving Hyman's we walked back through the market to get to our ship. We noticed a wooden puzzle vendor and Bill loves wooden puzzles so we spent a good bit of time there. Bill bought a little optical illusion spinner for himself and a wooden puzzle for Joe. The vendor makes all of the puzzles out of different woods and his brother takes the extra tiny scraps of wood and makes pretty guitar picks in an effort not to waste the leftover wood. I was going to buy Joe a hand made wooden guitar pick for $4.00 but since the puzzle Bill bought Joe was so expensive the vendor told me I could select a pick for him Joe at no cost. Very cool.
It was only a couple more blocks to the ship. I would love to visit Charleston again. There was so much that we saw and so much more that we didn't rush to try to see everything. We don't live too far away and it will be easy to plan a trip here when we have more time to enjoy this beautiful city.
