Friday, March 15th – Another adventure started today. We left home in the van around 10:00, much later than we planned but we never leave early so this was no big surprise. We made it to my mother's house that night in time to have a short visit before going to bed.

Saturday, March 16th – after leaving mom's house the next morning we stopped at the museum in Gilbertown, Alabama. Mom and her sister and brothers had inherited a piece of machinery that is part of a saw mill. I don't really understand what it does but it is made of steel. They were told they could deduct it from their taxes if they donated it but how do you put a value on that? Finally they decided to deduct the value of the weight of the steel.

My uncle took a flatbed truck to the weigh station to get the weight of the truck and flatbed. Then they hoisted this thing on the flatbed and weighed it again, then multiplied it times the cost per pound of steel if taken to a recycler. It was really a sizeable amount!

Behind the museum stands an old wooden building with a sign on the front that says it is “Choctaw County's First Courthouse at Barrytown, 1847. We loved seeing the old building but it was really leaning and didn't look very stable. I'm glad they were able to save this old building!

We got on the road for a day of driving with a stop in a little town that boasted 40 antique stores. The area was called “Antique Alley” and even though we didn't go into all 40 shops we did go into a few. Bill bought me 2 American Fostoria rose bowls different sizes and a beautiful pair of American Fostoria candlesticks. He also bought me an order of Chick Filet chicken strips in the little town. We made it to Tecumseh for the night.

This vacation turned out to be a lot more than we expected so it was quite a journey. It took us on a drive to Las Vegas for almost a week, on to San Diego for almost a week and then a drive to New Orleans where we got on a cruise ship for 15 days across the Atlantic to Rome. Then the same day it took us on another cruise ship which left late that afternoon for 47 days to several more places in Italy, all over the Greek islands, to Cairo Egypt and ended in Istanbul. From there we weren't ready to go home (even after almost a month on the road trip and 52 days on cruise ships) so we got on a train which ran on the old orient express train line and went to Bucharest, Transylvania (yes, we visited Dracula's castle) and then took the train to Budapest for several days. We had to be home by June 4th for a doctor's appointment for Joe so from Budapest we took the train to Venice. We were there the month before so this time we just stayed in our room on base and chilled and recouped from the 3 month vacation then got a flight home. So this really was the beginning of an adventure!
