Ilene, thanks for the input! I went back and added clarification on what the letters mean (it's our names). It is good to recognize how others understand our pages. I am going to go back and see if I can play with these other suggestions of yours. They are good suggestions. It should be easy enough to find something to end and anchor the ribbon with. I don't know if I can add a mat under the pictures or not but I'll play around and see! Thank you for all of the suggestions and ideas!
Rhea thanks for noting the scraplift. I wish I remember where I got the idea. Scraplifting is a perfectly acceptable way to pick up design ideas and I'm honored that you lifted from me. I want to comment on your layout too. I think you are a very ambitious scrapper, and you are trying out new ideas left and right, which is very good. You will learn a lot that way. But it might be a good idea to do your tests on a piece of scrap and see how you like it. It is a good idea to practice your doodling, which I think you did pretty good on it. Your littkle doodlebugs and flowers are very good. I wonder why you only used the ribbon part way across the page and how you secured it? I usually put it all the way across, or secure it with a buckle or something. Not that that is the only way to do it. It is ok to put ribbon across the pictures and other embellishments too. You picked great buttons to hang your letters from, and the way you colored those letters, I like it. I don't think you should consider the letters a flop, but I am having a hard time figuring out what they mean. Maybe you could write that in your description. I like the small deco mats and the way you matted your pictures. I wonder if your pictures would stand out a little more if you would put another mat between the photo and the paisley pp? Suggested colors would be black, or pale green as you used for the deco squares. Overall, I's give this layout a better grade than you did in your self-appraisal. Too much criticism (or perfectionism) dampens creativity and learning. But of course you know that, right?
I wish I could take pictures better, the doodling is not in focus. I can't wait to show you the page in REAL LIFE! It truly did add to the page. I'm definitely going to start practicing my "doodling."
This page in my son's college years album is titled family. The big picture was one of those summer family visits that do not happen often enough. I highlighted our family by adding our last names. Most of the folks in the picture have the last name of Selbe (my family of origin); being the only daughter, my immediate family has the last name of Varian. So the picture is family, Selbe and Varian. I love them and know that my ds has good memories of them. He actually was not present on this day.
I had high hopes for this page but it turned out to be a disaster. I was excited to use Heidi Swapp clear letters but they did not look good. I tried several techniques to cause them to stand out, tried to outline in pen, distress ink the edges and finally I ended up painting the letters. I did not like the FIRST THREE COLORS and had to scrape some of them off while one color wiped off with water. And all of this was done AFTER the letters were attached to the paper!!!! What a nightmare. I hear ladies talking, I see these great layouts here but to pull them off myself is a whole different story!
The letters hanging from buttons was lifted from Truth and Wisdom's lbc03 Diva page.
Days later I added the doodling after reading July CK and Scrapbooks, etc. I lifted some doodling bugs, the ladybugs from Scrapbooks, etc, the butterfly and bee from ScrappinSpanky's I'm Cute page.
