This is my entry into Jen Merali's gorgeous circle journal with the topic “Fabric of our lives”. The only fabric I have laying around are the scraps from my home sewing projects, so I went in that direction. I took photos and placed them near the fabric scraps they go with.

“My outlook on fabric completely changed once we moved into our first home. Before then, I had looked at fabric in terms of the clothes I wore, and that was about it. We had saved every penny we had to get into our home, so money for decorating was nonexistent. I decided to take a sewing class so that I could learn the basics, in hopes that I would be able to someday make window treatments and pillows for our home. My mom gave me her Singer sewing machine and I went through an eight week class. My first project was a tote bag, followed by a pillow and a pair of pajama pants for my husband. I couldn’t believe that I was able to create these things myself. Fabric stores were always so fascinating to me, but until now, I didn’t have the faintest idea of what to do with the fabric I wanted to buy. After the class, I set out to make curtains for our family room and dining room. I made a few sets of single panel curtains and moved on to some pretty simple shades that I tied up with grosgrain ribbon. I later found out that I was pregnant with our first child, so I made tie top curtains for her room, some fringed pillows, and a quilt. I have since made curtains for several more rooms in our house and have aspirations to create floor-to-ceiling curtains for our master bedroom as well as a canopy for our bed. The fabrics are all casual and elegant in rich reds, creams and natural greens. It really has been amazing to see what I have been able to create with a little patience and determination. I look forward to creating more handmade pieces to decorate our home.”

Thanks for looking! Heather
