The photos above are of the gaol's canteen.

Life at the gaol may have operated under strict rules and regulations but over the years some surprising things occurred and rules were slightly bent. For example, there is a story of a prisoner being transferred from another institution to the Adelaide Gaol and he had a pet budgie (parakeet). Apparently, the other gaol where he was previously held allowed pet birds, and the prisoner wanted to bring his budgie with him. It was decided that he would be allowed to keep his budgie at his own expense.

The bird obviously needed to be fed, and thus birdseed was ordered and his owner was able to purchase it from his earnings through the canteen. The introduction of a pet bird at the gaol began a whole new trend and soon after his arrival other prisoners were also keen on getting pet budgies.

Eventually there were approximately half-a-dozen prisoners who had pet budgies and took pride in training them and showing off by walking around with the budgies perched on their shoulders.

Birdcages (in the upper left photo a birdcage is displayed on a top shelf), mirrors and ladders were therefore made available to buy through the canteen providing they were pre-approved by the officer in charge and then ordered in.
