We left the fort just in time to walk to the park by the water to catch our boat to Palomino Island. We started out in a small boat. After 10 or 15 minutes we were transferred from our little boat to a larger catamaran and taken on the hour-and-a-half ride to Palomino Island. The island is famous for its huge sea lion population. There were a hundred-times as many sea lions as we expected. Literally thousands and thousands of them!

As soon as we got close to the island some of the sea lions slid from the rocks into the water and followed our boat. They were so curious – they got within a few feet.

I do have to add - a colony of sea lions does not smell good. Not even a little bit. After a while we got used to the odor and could tolerate it but when we first started passing the big rocks covered with sea lions it was difficult to breathe. How can such cute creatures stink so badly?
