DS's hiking trail experience 2015. He did the journaling for me.
"I took the Weeden Creek Trail and was hoping to get to Gothic Basin but had to stop at the waterfalls. My boots, the actual climb, my cardio and the time of day were a deterrent to continuing. The trail was developed by miners who didn't take much care or concern for how the trail got them to the location just that it got them there. However, I vow to get back and spend the night at Gothic Basin.
The first mile is on a flat road that is part of the road to Monte Cristo ghost town. You turn off and walk about half a mile that offers gentle elevation gain a couple creek crossings and some areas with no trees but dense underbrush.
After the easy stroll of the first 1.5 miles this trail gets down to business. The next 2 miles involved nearly 2000 miles of elevation gain. Long straight climbs with big step ups and minimal switchbacks that periodically break out from the trees for views of the peaks of the Monte Cristo rang loom off to the east. Some mining remnants remain. The biggest opening comes where I stopped. Giant slabs of granite enjoy the cold mountain snow runoff and create awesome waterfalls besides outstanding views north and east. "
