My husband, Mike, and I took our first solo trip out to Anacapa Island in April of 2010. It was a rough trip. The sea started out calm, but as the day wore on, the winds picked up and conditions became turbulent. We were both violently seasick.

The boat was heeled over at a crazy angle. Later, Mike told me that we briefly had a rail underwater. Luckily, it righted itself before I had a chance to take notice, or I would have freaked out.

We arrived at Anacapa Island and looked for a spot to drop anchor. An onshore wind was howling. It would have been an understatement to say that I was terrified. I was certain we were going to wash up on the beach, and our grand sailing adventure would end in supreme embarrassment.

I said to Mike, I think we made a mistake. I dont think I can do this.

Mike responded, Yeah, this was a mistake.

Mike kept anchor watch that night. Early the next morning, I awoke to the sound of screeching seagulls and the smell of freshly-brewed coffee.

I went topside to find Mike chilling with the seagulls. The sun was shining. The winds and the sea had calmed. The kelp alongside the boat formed patterns I found enchanting, and I could see fish and gigantic stingrays swimming nearby. Off in the distance, we could see a fishing boat but other than that, it was just Mike and me, alone in the world with the wildlife.

I looked at Mike. He looked at me. We both looked at the seagulls, the rays, the island and the kelp beds. I said to him, This isnt so bad. Maybe we can do this after all.

Mike said, Yeah, we can definitely do this.

And so we did. We were out cruising for more than 5 years all together, and we had the adventure of a lifetime. Now I am working on documenting it all in our scrapbooks.
