JOURNALING:
Oh, don’t let this wide-eyed smile fool you. I’d just waken up from a three months-long dream state. The previous night, I’d had a mini breakdown in the bathroom. Bone-tired. Half-awake. And wondering if I’ll ever feel what it’s like to be lucid and alert again. They said hang in there.
Two hungry tummies to fill through the night. 9:00 p.m. Bedtime. 12:00 a.m. Every night. 3:00 a.m. Like clockwork. 6:00 a.m. Morning. The day begins. They said take naps.
The first three months. We heard the warnings. We knew it would not be easy. Even so, we were not prepared for the level of exhaustion we would suffer. Knowledge is not experience. They said it would get better.
Yes, they. The “royal” they. The other parents of twins who were long past this phase. The survivors. A population of happy, normally-functioning parents [still] enamored with their children. Someday we would join them. Someday we would look back and remember the haze of the first 3½ months of our precious little girls’ lives. Someday we would appreciate what it took to survive that phase.
Perseverance. Naps. Faith that things would improve.
And love. Most of all, love...
