I found out over the weekend that my sister got accepted to a teaching program that's taking her across the country for two years! Journaling doesn't come easy to me but I couldn't condense this one for anything! :)
Journaling reads: “Teach For America” is a program that sends dedicated young people to teach in urban and rural schools in some of the lowest income areas of the country. The aim is to give the children in these areas, where resources and attention might be scarce, an equal chance at life through education. You’ve been talking about this program since you finished college six months ago. You applied.
Then today, I learned that you are moving to Philadelphia.
When you told me the news, the “big sisterly” emotions- those that mimic motherly ones- immediately came pouring over me: the protectiveness, the worries, the thoughts of missing you, the fears. I wasn’t even able to tell you that I was happy and excited for you.
Feeling guilty that I didn’t want you to leave, I took a step back from my own selfish feelings and thought about why you must have been picked for this. You are bright and work hard towards success. You are tirelessly dedicated to everything you commit to. You are have a kind, patient and empathetic heart. You are constantly finding ways to expand your own knowledge and horizons, to teach yourself new things, and to continually learn. You are an artist. And, you have the incredible ability to find opportunities in every small thing- this, the quality in you that I admire the most. You can take something that anyone else would dismiss and make it golden- not with the best or most expensive resources, but with your creativity. You not only find, but create value in places where it isn’t always apparent.
When I think of the mission of the program, I find myself hoping that your students find inspiration and knowledge not only from the textbooks you’ll use, but from you… I hope they learn to think creatively, and to seize opportunities the way you do, even when it seems that the right resources aren’t at hand. When I think of your qualities, I realize just how much you have to offer the students you’ll be teaching… I see just how perfect this opportunity is for you… I understand just how much you need to be shared with others… and I can say that I am genuinely thrilled that you have this chance to touch so many young lives.
And, amidst all the realizations, I am also reminded of just how amazing you are.
