These are the caterpillars for the Eastern Black Swallowtail. As you can see, they've had a field day with my parsley plant, but that's ok because I planted extra this year, just for them.

I had one plant this time last year, and when I saw a couple of these little green - what I thought were worms - I did a quick internet search to see what they were before I went out and fed them all to the chickens. Since they were butterfly babies, they got to stay.

Tom and I love Basil, but we neither one eat much parsley - which is why only one plant last year. But this spring, I put in three additional plants so these little guys would have plenty to eat. I'm so glad they came back to my little buffet offering, although they don't actually HAVE more to eat because there are more OF them this year. They don't seem to be interested in anything but the parsley, so it's ok with me if they eat it all.

Next spring, there will be lots of beautiful black swallowtails to pollinate the new garden flowers. That's how nature works.

I love this time of year.
