Hawaii to Oahu - Both Sides

Monday, April 11, 2011 – I've always wanted to take a flight on Hawaiian Airlines and today was the day.

Hawaiian Airlines was nice but much more cramped than the military planes. I take the extra leg and knee room on the military aircraft for granted.

Each Hawaiian plane has a name; ours plane was Palila. When we wash license plates on Honeymoon Beach we see the planes as they taxi to the runway. Now when we see “Palila”, we will remember that “Palila” is the plane that took us to the Big Island.

The view from the sky was gorgeous – the water was so many shades of blue and turquoise. Right after we took off we went over Diamond Head (see photo).

A recycling center on the Big Island saves license plates for Bill; normally they ship them all to Oahu and we recycle the “awful” ones. However, this time, we decided to go to the Big Island and hand-pick what we wanted to buy and ship only those to Oahu. It costs a few cents more per pound but we get to cherry pick what we want.

We arrived on the Big Island early and checked into our room, which was in a large house divided into nice sized private bedrooms, each with a private bath, but it also had a living room and a full kitchen we could use. Bill enjoyed talking to other guests in the living room at night while I worked on the computer.

Then a quick drive through the McDonalds drive-through; next stop was the recycling center to see how many license plates were waiting for us. They were packed tightly into boxes – about 200 boxes. Each box had approximately 100 license plates so we had to go through 20,000 to pick what to ship to Oahu. We decided to start work right away, so we would have more time to play the next day.
In two hours we went through 110 boxes (11,000 license plates) but only decided to purchase about 1,900 of them. The work went fast which meant the next day would be very easy!
